Study English in Auckland NZ at Northcross Intermediate

Northcross Intermediate School is one of the top Auckland New Zealand schools, offering quality English courses (ESOL) for International Students. Students from overseas can study English together with other international students with similar backgrounds while continuing with a full school intermediate school curriculum. Student accommodation is also available through our school families.

Northcross Intermediate School has been signatory to The Code of Practice for International Students since 2002.

Please view our Photo Gallery to see what our students have been doing this term - you will see pictures of the recent ESOL Interschool Sports Day and Ambassadors Club in action.

Immunisations for Year 7 students take place this week. Students must have their parents signature on permission slips or they will not be immunised.

Some significant Immigration changes to INZ’s health screening requirements have just been announced by the Minister of Immigration. See information below from INZ:
Currently if a student intends to remain in New Zealand for 12 months or more, we require full medicals (and x-rays if there are Tb risks).

If the student is offshore, they must use an INZ panel doctor. In most countries there are only a few panel doctors, meaning that some students have to travel long distances to see them.

The Minister has just announced that full fee paying international students will only require Tb screening. To view more information please visit the website:

Located on the scenic North Shore of Auckland City, the school is close to all amenities including shopping malls, parks, local businesses, transport and beautiful beaches. The North Shore is regarded as one of the safe areas of Auckland city and is a prime location for families with young children.

Northcross Intermediate offers comprehensive English Language classes (known as English for Speakers of Other Languages, or ESOL ).These are taught alongside a wide range of mainstream subjects from Maths to Music, encouraging International Students to broaden their academic and social horizons.

Our International Team comprises of International Student Coordinator Sharon Hines , Accommodation Coordinator Sally Farrell ,our Korean Support Person Susan Hwang and our experienced ESOL Teachers  Annette Thomas, Chrina George and Ethne De Bruin.

The International Department is committed to providing both quality pastoral care and education working closely with students, parents, staff and homestay caregivers to ensure the transition into the Kiwi way of life is a smooth one.

We recognise that it can be daunting for students coming from different cultures to integrate into a new school. Therefore we have implemented an Ambassadors Club whereby our students have the opportunity to meet new students and together participate in different activites during the lunch hour on a fortnightly basis.

Students may come with their parents or may choose to live with a Designated Caregiver or in a Kiwi Homestay. If a student is coming to study english without a parent then they will have to have access to a designated first language support person in New Zealand. If you need an agent to advise you in your first language then we suggest you visit the Education New Zealand website for a list of New Zealand specialist Agents.

There is also useful information on the New Zealand Immigration website offering advice on study and "settling in" once you and/or your child are here. Go to Settling In.
